I had no idea what that word meant but I love it. Braiding sweetgrass was so lovely. I can feel the messages from the plants and trees coming through so much stronger these days.....scribd is so great isn't it?
For me it's been a progression of many things - I did a course a few years back with Amanda Nicole (she's on here as the Lirodendress you might want to check her out) and I've been clearing the old baggage around communicating with the natural world . Trusting it allowing it - not focusing too hard on it....this full moon felt like it brought a whoosh of plant/tree information with it.
As a fellow logophile, I loved this post! And I hadn't heard of Scribd, but I'm most definitely going to check it out! Audible is just way too expensive for the amount of audiobooks I want to listen to! Also: Braiding Sweetgrass is one of my favorite books of all time. It's so beautiful and powerful and informative.
Oh yay! And I have saved SO MUCH money by using Scribd! It doesn't have everything - but it has a lot. It's the first place I look for anything these days! And I wholeheartedly agree. Have you read her other one? Gathering Moss?
I Love the heart reading its book, legs splayed. That was ME for my whole childhood!!!!! My mother spent countless nights busting me as I sneakily kept reading and reading and reading instead of sleeping. These days, as people all around me binge movies & TV, I really really want to see all these cool new shows but I find I just CANNOT tear myself away from my books! And you know me, I'm pretty sure I mentioned to you before - I'm OBSESSED with books on tape. Er, on digital whatever. Ever since I listened to Ben Kingsley read Autobiography of a Yogi, and Emma Thompson read Howard's End to me like 25 years ago, I've been hooked on this type of reading, and I basically choose to listen (vs eye-read) to my books about 90-95% of the time. SO MANY GOOD BOOKS!!!! The end. Also, love you.
I'm watching way less TV too. I love listening to an audiobook at night with a beautiful candle burning. It's THE BEST!! And that's interesting that most of your reading is audio by choice! I wonder what I'll find myself choosing when the option returns for me!
SUCH a great post, Medha - and thank you so much for your amazing spreadsheet! I haven't read anything you've read so far this year, but your reviews are pointing me in the direction of some I'd like to have a look at! For the moment, though, I'm gripped with Substack's very own Julie B. Hughes' amazing new book 'Staring Down a Dream', which was published just last week: https://juliebhughes.substack.com/p/find-the-others
Favourite picture this week? I ♥️ WORDS.
(And I've thought this a lot since subscribing to your newsletter: but I always do a (happy!) double-take of all your pictures, because we have dark hair, glasses AND a stripy top in common....! #twins)

Oh that's lovely! Did you notice the connecting to the plants and trees increasing straight after reading Sweetgrass? I haven't had that. YET!

I haven't, but I'd like to! Maybe I'll get it on Scribd!
It's there! https://www.scribd.com/audiobook/387013772/Gathering-Moss-A-Natural-and-Cultural-History-of-Mosses
What struck me was how much more alive your drawing and writing is after a misdiagnosis. Thanks for sharing.
Well, that's fascinating! Do you have any sense of what feels different to you Douglas? More alive?

Ooohhh... let me know what ones you do read and what you think of them! I'm always fascinated by people's similarities and our differences.
I hadn't come across Julie before! I had a quick look and the book doesn't seem to have an audio version yet. But I can wait! 😁
And hahaha. I LOVE that we're twins!!
